Thoughts On Turning 32

Every year, I get a little bit scared of getting older. There’s something about moving away from your 20s that makes you feel like you’re not cool anymore. It’s as if you’re still trying to fit in but the new kids on the block give you nervous side glances. It’s awkward. It’s unnerving. And you can’t help but bathe yourself in self-doubt.

But let me tell you my honest thoughts about being in your 30s: it’s a gift you don’t want to turn down. Yes, you’re not as hip as the other 25-year-old. You’re not as whimsical as the bartender at the indie coffee shop. But you feel more stable. You’re more at peace in your own skin. And nobody can tell you crap about anything.

At 32, this is the first time in my life that I can say that I’m very healthy. Age comes with more income. And because of that, I have access to good, healthy, and somewhat expensive food. I can afford to hire coach. In my 30s, I look so much better because I have the financial resources to be taken care of by the best dermatologist and buy effective skin care products. I may freak out that I’m getting older but I am proud of the person that I have become.

It’s natural to wish to be as youthful as you were before, but you can’t deny that you’re wiser now. You make better decisions. You choose what’s practical for you. And you have moments when you don’t fall into societal pressures. Getting older might not be the news that will break the internet, but it’s something that helps refine you.

In a decade or so, you will back and realize that this time of your life is still full of aspirations. It’s not too late to dream bigger. It’s not too late to correct your mistakes. And turn the tides around. Some days you will feel jaded because of the would haves, could haves, should haves. But you have to remind yourself that new day equals new hope.

You are in your own journey. And as cliché as it sounds, your age is just a numerical thing. It’s a fact. But it must not hold you back from doing what you want. As long as you have the focus, courage, and determination, you can carry on even if it’s a bit scary sometimes. Being cool doesn’t get you anywhere. But being perseverant does.
